GAPS Legal Little Smokies!?!?

by brenda on February 6, 2012

Farm Boy 1 is ecstatic! I found his favorite goodies at a local Whole Foods, and they’re clean! They are made by Applegate Farms, and they’re called “The Greatest Little Organic Uncured Smoky Pork Franks.” No corn syrup. No sugar. No nitrates. No what-ya-ma-call-it junk!! The only questionable ingredient is Sodium Lactate, which the package says is made from beets. If it’s processed correctly, it’s simply a fermented beet product that helps preserve the meat. As long as it’s actually fermented and not “fermented” (as in acid washed, how most “fermented” foods are treated in the US), I think it should probably be ok. We had some of these today, I will let you know if we have any adverse side effects. ;)

So, just in time for the day after the Super Bowl (ha! Because you all want to make a bunch of appetizers today, right?!), imagine the possibilities! Little smokies wrapped in bacon, little smokies with BBQ sauce (homemade, with honey), little smokies wrapped in a coconut flour or nut flour dough, little smokies in a sweet & sour sauce (homemade, with honey), etc.!

What else can you think of? Are you as excited as Farm Boy 1? :)

Yes! I am totally as excited as Farm Boy 1!! My mom offered to make the standard SAD Pigs-in-a-Blanket for the game last night and I politely declined – they’re just too gross. This is fantastic – I love Lil Smokies!

My husband will be thrilled. These were on his families traditional Christmas breakfast menu and he wishes they were on our menu.

Such a coincidence! I was thinking about posting about the Applegate beef franks. We just had some in our dinner last night. I call them “real food, paleo, and GAPS-legal hot dogs.” LOL Anyway, I didn’t know they made these, too. I’ll have to look for them. Have your tried their bacon? Mmm.

Very timely post for us too. :) I made my husband “meat candy,” or (normal) little smokies wrapped in bacon, for the Super Bowl, and allowed the kids to have one each. I cringed with each bite though! I haven’t found these at my local store yet, but maybe if I make a special request? I am totally as excited about them as Farm Boy 1. :)

I’m very excited about these! They look better and you don’t have to cup up regular franks! My only question is how are the hogs raised?
