Why my family is doing the GAPS Intro again

Again…well, we never really did it like you’re supposed to do it. We didn’t drink broth like you’re supposed to. We added some fruit from the very beginning. So, we never actually did the GAPS Intro.

But, we’ve been on “Full GAPS” for nearly 2 years–so why start over?

It’s mainly for me. Despite the tremendous healing I have seen on GAPS, I am still seeing a few issues that I want to heal:

My ear hurts. Every now and then, my right ear hurts and gets waxy. It’s yeast. It usually happens when I’ve eaten a lot of honey. The GAPS Intro will wipe that yeast right out of me…I just need to do it! :) Pre-GAPS my right ear hurt most of the time–so I have seen healing. I just want it to go away for good!

I’ve been drinking a lot of tea with honey lately, and a couple of my back teeth hurt. I read Cure Tooth Decay when we got our foster kids (they have rotten teeth), and I know that the answer to healing dental issues is to drink broth, take fish oil, and go GAPS, basically.

On occasion (though it’s rare these days), my thyroid hurts. Or, at least, I think it’s my thyroid. It’s in my throat, right where I think my thyroid is. Around the same time it hurts, I feel a little agitated–which makes me think it’s a hormone thing. I need a good detoxing before I check into any other methods of dealing with my thyroid.

As of 2 weeks ago, my digestion is messed up. We ate gluten free pizza for Farm Boy 1’s 10th Birthday. My body, for sure, without a doubt, cannot stand grains or starch. My digestion is off, let’s just say that. From 2 slices of pizza, I gained 6 lbs that I still haven’t lost, my tummy is poochy (bloated), and is feeling yucky after everything I eat. YET–it’s growling and starving all of the time, as if, something has taken away my nutrients (well, duh, that’s what grains and starch DO!). :) I just need the GAPS Intro, that’s all there is to it…

And some of it is for the kids:

The foster kids have rotten front teeth. The dentist wants to pull them. I wonder if we can heal them. We might as well try! We’ve got an appointment for a January extraction–I’d love to see if we can make a difference before then. We obviously won’t make their tiny little teeth grow back into regular sized teeth–they’re gone. For good. But we can help the structure that is still in tact…maybe…that’s what we’re hoping for, anyways.

Farm Boy 1 was a 1 lb 12 oz preemie and was “nourished” intravenously with TPN (basically, soy oil straight into the blood stream). I have read recently that 60% of the kids who have that end up with severe liver damage–like an alcoholic. Almost 100% of cancer patients who start TPN will pass away within 1 year. They go on TPN because part of their gut has been removed and they can’t digest food. But soy oil = estrogen and estrogen feeds gut cancer. It’s a terrible predicament, to say the least! Anyways, Farm Boy 1 is itchy a lot of the time. That’s a sign of liver damage. He’s had some testing done, and he’s having more done–and there’s nothing for sure showing up right now, but we need to watch out for this. When you read about healing liver damage, do you know what you’ll find? Basically, the the GAPS diet is the answer! That, and fish oil. No refined carbs. No starchy things. No sugars. Those foods tax the liver. If we find out that he does indeed have damage, there is a new (to the US–it’s what they do in the UK) treatment that can fully restore the liver. They give the kids fish oil, intravenously. Isn’t that amazing? Anyways, we’re starting with diet–and if we find out that there is severe damage, we’ll fly where we need to fly and get that treatment for our boy!

And partially it’s for The Farmer:

He’s still got psoriasis after almost 2 years on GAPS. There’s something in his body that needs to get cleansed out. I believe that the Intro can do that.

And partially it’s for all of you:

I write this blog about my experience with GAPS, but we never did the Intro. How silly is that!? When people send me e-mails or post comments about “how did you handle __” during the Intro, I want to be able to give a good answer. And since I need to do the Intro anyways, it just makes sense! :)

And, while I believe that honey is far better (like 100 times better!) than refined, white sugar (or even organic evaporated cane juice), I think my family is addicted lately. We’re buying it wholesale from a local apiary & re-selling. We have a 1 gallon glass jar of raw honey on our counter a.l.w.a.y.s. It’s too much. We need to cut back and simplify things for our bodies.

So, very soon, you’ll see some posts from me (and Tarena!) about the GAPS Intro and our experiences, and how we’re doing things. Our family is big (9 people!), so taking on the Intro diet is a bit of a big ordeal! I just purchased lots and lots of meat, and I have an order in to our local farmer for 32 onions, 12 large winter squash, etc., etc.!

Did you start the GAPS Intro, or do you want to? Why did you start it? Or, why do you want to start it?

I have been reading your blog for quite some time… and really enjoy it.

We too are going back on GAPS– INTRO! whoa– a bit intimidating…. but as with your family each one of my family members (8 of us) needs it for one reason or another.

Coming “off” Gaps (just adding in rice and potatoes) was a SUPER slippery slope!! VERY slippery–

I have tons of bones for broth soups– and the first week in November is my produce co-op– I will too be stocking up on some butternut squash and things–

I was going to put it off more– but its always more fun to do with with a group– so here goes nothing– maybe I’ll aim for a November 1 start date.. but I think even this week- 1 meal a day will be GAPS- broth.

We too did the GAPS with a fruit for a treat for everyone doing what they were supposed to during the meal (eating all their broth/soup)… it was easy because that was Spring/Summer– not sure what the “treat’ will be now in fall/winter!?!

Love this Brenda! You are amazing my dear friend and I’m so proud of you for doing this even with a large family! =) I’m praying for you all!!
Can’t wait to see how the Lord blesses you and your hard work!

I’m excited to hear that you’ll be doing the intro and sharing your experiences with it here! I’ve found this site to be very helpful for my husband and I as we recently started the full gaps diet. We’re mainly doing it for my GI, mental health and weight loss. I tried doing the into right away but it was too overwhelming and so we switched to the full diet. We’re seeing great improvemts across the board in our symptoms after only a few weeks. I want to go back and do the intro once I feel like I can handle it.
One question that I would love to see you blog on is how to make broth. The gaps book and site doesn’t give very detailed instructions. I’ve been making chicken broth like the website insteucts but it never solidifys when chilled. Growing up my mom would make broth from the bones of left over carcasses from thanksgiving turkey or whatever and it always gelled once refrigerated. It just seemed like a heartier broth. I’ve read how the gelatin is supposed to be very healing to the gut lining so I feel like my broth is lacking…. I’ve been using 1 whole raw frying chicken and just enough water to cover, bring to a boil, reduce and simmer for several hours. I even tried simmering over 12 hours once to see if longer simmering would help but it didn’t. :-/
Anyway I would just love to hear your feedback on making broth the gaps way. Is it supposed to not gel when cold? I’m thinking about roasting the chicken in the oven next time first, pulling off the meat and then using just the bones for broth. Maybe I just have too much meat in there?? Thanks for all the great info you provide! You’ve been a huge blessing. :)

Jessica, I am glad that this site has been helpful! I will post about making broth very soon! Blessings as you eat to nourish your body!

    Denise,
Go for it! :) The GAPS Intro is a little challenging, but if you have done GAPS before, it’s really not that hard.
Did you use fruit in the beginning? At least for the first few weeks, Dr. Natasha says to stay away from fruit. Cooked fruit is added in stage 4. Tarena’s family used a treat box of stickers and prizes. Maybe this would work for your family? Good luck!

Looking forward to hearing how you make your chicken broth solidify– my beef broth is TERRIFIC nice and thick and gelatinous… but my chicken broth just doesn’t do the same…just a thin layer on top?!/

HI! Your website is wonderful! So many out there going through hard digestive issues and finding out about GAPS – this is SO helpful for those starting out and for those in full GAPS for the great food ideas! Keep it up!
    Blessings!

Hi, in regards to your throat having a pain and then also feeling irritable, this happens to me every time I eat wheat (and if I continue I’ll get all sorts of yeast related infections including throat thrush). For me it’s specifically wheat, but for you it may be a grain thing in general. I wonder if it is my thyroid/hormones. I had assumed it was related to thrush but I have read about grains/sugars impairing hormone function.

oh my goodness! i am so excited that you are starting GAPS intro! because i have been on intro for about 3-4 weeks and i have so many allergies that my intro never gets bigger. i can’t really start introducing any new foods other than meat ,soup, and veggies! my mom is on the BED diet for candida but i want to show her that she needs the GAPS diet too and she needs to start learning to cook this way for the rest of my family! this will be such a HUGE help, you are amazing for doing this for a family of 9. that just can show my mom that she can do it for a family of 6! keep it up! i will be praying for you guys as you go through this intro journey!

Ooh! I am looking forward to your experience!

My daughter (11) and I are on GAPS Intro Week 2. But we started without the books coz I was just desperate to do something about our sever eczema outbreak. I was itching till I cried :(

But having come from a very, very restrictive Elimination Diet for the past 1 year for dd and 3 months for myself, GAPS intro really isn’t that bad.

However there are many things I am learning like how we actually should eat the marrow! But the greatest challenge for us is getting organic meats and eggs. And even if we can find organic eggs, I am quite sure they are fed soy and corn :(

But we do what we can and trust that ultimately the Great Physician is the Healer.

    Thanks, Sue! :)

Kristina, yup, I’ve been off of wheat for about 3 years now, too. I’ve seen lots of health improvements since ditching wheat! I’m hopeful we can figure this out! You might be right that it’s yeast. I’ll keep paying attention to it and see how it feels w/o any honey or fruit for a bit. We will see! Thanks for the comment! I hope you can figure it out soon, too! :)

  • http://www.wellfedhomestead.com brenda

Caroline, I’m so sorry about the allergies! That’s sad! :( I hope that with the GAPS Intro you can find some healing! Thank you for the prayers!

    Serene,
How cool that you are in Singapore and reading my blog, all the way from Oregon! Wow! Don’t you love technology? :) Look on our Facebook wall for a photo I shared yesterday of a lady with eczema who got healed on GAPS.
Organic meats/eggs are hard to find! Do you have space to grow your own? Chickens aren’t too difficult (we currently have hundreds!). :) Blessings!!

I’m doing the GAPS Intro now, or trying to, while I wait for the GAPS book from the library. I’m on day 4 and stage 3, having just added avocado. Its sort of tough to follow because boiled meat just doesn’t appeal to me, but I’m doing it to try and address a thyroid problem thats just gotten worse and worse for years, and I think its helping! I expect to get through the intro in about a week, which isn’t too bad.

I’ve found a few good recipes that only involve tiny deviations from the intro diet. I’ve actually broiled turkey legs in the oven, eaten them with honey, and then put the bones in the slow cooker for broth – its just me so I can get away with that. :) I’ve also made ‘faux’ french onion soup, substituting portobellos and spinach for bread and cheese in bone broth – but I fried the onions and mushrooms in butter, which I think is only allowed post-intro.

Good luck – I’m definitely interested in hearing if your thyroid is helped by this!

Hi! I am wanting to put our family on the GAPS diet. We have 9 people in our family as well. I was wondering if you do all organic? also where do you get your meat if it is organic?
I am trying to see how I can make enough broth for our family everyday!!

  • Dr. Gaie

We are using the greenpastures brand of fermented fish oil and butter oil in gel form for our 5 year old with “stained” teeth and cavities…the stains are visibly improving. The dentist used to just “watch” them until they turned into cavities. She also loves broth! But we bribe her to eat the fish/butter oil with… candy! Hey, it’s working at least. We all have a long way to go
