What you eat will impact the health of your grandchildren!

It is commonly known that what a pregnant mother eats can impact her growing baby. What we don’t often consider is the nutrition the expectant mother had as a child–and what her parents and grandparents ate before her. Do these foods impact the health of her unborn child? What about that child’s future children? If Dr. Francis Pottenger’s Cat study applies to humans, then yes, what the generations before us ate matters when considering the health of our children and grandchildren. When I first heard about Pottenger’s Cats, honestly, I wasn’t all that interested. I care about nutrition and studies in nutrition, I just don’t care about cats that much.…

How to have a Real Food Star Wars Party

Today is May 4th, and if you’re a Star Wars fan, you won’t be able to get through the day without at least watching 1 movie. Maybe an entire marathon. Ready, set, go! May the 4th be with you! I married a Star Wars fan. He owned a duplex (he lived in half and rented out the other half) when we were dating each other. His duplex was decorated in Star Wars movie posters and action figures. I added sunflowers to his bathroom, stenciled vegetables to his kitchen, and flowery pillows to his couch…and slowly moved all of the Star Wars stuff to 1 room. 🙂 (He calls the days…

Life Before GAPS (Why we went gluten free, then on GAPS)

I just found a journal entry from January 1, 2009. Actually, there is a collection of letters from that date–to God, to my husband, to my kids. I thought I was going to die. Let me explain. As of January 1, 2009, my entire chin had been numb for 2 straight months. I was getting testing done, and was about to have an MRI to check for jaw cancer. My jaw (right side, where I have a “screw loose” from a previous surgery) was in INCREDIBLE pain. That, along with the numbness that would not go away, were scary signs. Jaw cancer is fast, and there isn’t a lot of…

Why My Family is doing the GAPS diet

The 6 of us have been on this diet for 10 months now. It all started with going gluten free for a year. We had attempted gluten free twice before that, but never whole-heartedly. One night our son, Farm Boy 1, (7 at the time) cried at the dinner table and asked why he didn’t grow, even though he ate so much. And why the other kids on his soccer team were so much taller than him…This prompted our whole-hearted effort towards gluten free eating.   Farm Boy 1 was born at 26 weeks gestation, and since he started at only 1 lb 12 oz, he’s always been “catching up.”…
