The Cost of Producing Raw Milk
I recently asked y’all on Facebook how much you spend on raw milk. The prices ranged from $3 per gallon up to $20. The break down is like this: 43% pay $7 or less per gallon 45% pay between $8 and $13 per gallon 12% pay over $14 per gallon We have 2 dairy cows, but only one is in milk right now. Our other cow just got “serviced” last month and we hope that she is pregnant! I am going to break down our costs for you, to show you how much we spent in the month of May (2013) on our dairy cows, and how much we made…

What I Buy from Azure Standard
I am a grocery-price freak. Yup, I memorize how much items are per pound, and I know where to get them cheaper. Azure Standard is one of those companies I order from once every month or two for some particular staples. I like Azure Standard because: A lot of the stuff is organic I can buy in bulk and by the case Some of the products are from their own farm, in Oregon It means less trips to the store for me It makes real food more affordable for me There is a minimum $500 order through Azure Standard, but this isn’t a problem if you combine orders with friends. Usually, one…

H2O: Stop drinking 8 glasses per day
I’ve never craved a lot of water. I would much rather drink tea than water. I think I would feel bloated and pukey (is that a word?) if I drank 8+ glasses of water a day. There are some people who seem to crave water–they always have to have it. This is seen as a bad thing, because it’s a sign of diabetes. And yet, mainstream health articles seem to say “drink more water!” How much water are you drinking every day? Half of your body weight in ounces? A huge jug? Several glasses full? Have you bought into the idea that you need to drink a lot of water and you…

Links I loved this June!
photo credit This great post about Oxalates. Jill is a chiropractor and a nutritionist and she is incredibly smart! Her family sticks to GAPS/SCD. If you have not checked out her blog, do! I’ve had people ask me about oxalates and GAPS & I’ve thought about writing a post about it, but I did not feel like I’d researched it enough. Jill knows her stuff, so check it out! Do you want the government deciding what your child should eat?
If you’ve read this blog much, you know that I’m anti-soy, anti-sugar, anti-processed foods. If you know much about the USDA guidelines for food, you know that in our country, eating dry cereal is considered healthy and eating more than 1 egg per day is considered hazardous to your health. It is one thing to have these healthy standards “out there” and to be able to make our own choices. It is another thing when the schools start dictating what our children can and cannot eat based on these ludicrous government standards. Check out the following clip: I would be apalled if that was my child! The Weston Price Foundation…

Eating Should Not Involve Math!
I hate math…kind of…I’m a homeschool mom, and I love teaching my kids. My children are well versed in many events in history, lots of literature, some science, some geography, and they know their grammar and spelling pretty darn well. But when it comes to math, I lose patience with spending an hour over a workbook with a kid who still doesn’t get the thing I taught him 5 times so far this week…youknowwhatImean? Is it just my kids? To make up for this problem, we use an online math program (Math IXL) and hands-on math (i.e., give them dollars and change and let them figure out what to buy…

Harvard Law School Raw Milk Debate
At one time, everyone drank raw milk. But with the invention of pasteurization and its alleged safety benefits, consumption of raw milk in this country almost completely disappeared. In fact, in some states it is illegal to sell raw milk. But a growing segment of the population is clamoring for increased access to raw milk, citing its nutritional benefits and recently discovered inbuilt safety mechanisms. Opponents are skeptical of such nutritional claims and believe the safety risks of unpasteurized milk are simply too high. Join the Food Law Society as we present a debate covering the legal, health, and nutritional merits of raw milk. URL Link to this Press…

Eat with Conviction!
“Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a mis print.” –Mark Twain Do you read health books? Lots of them? Or do you watch the news and 20/20 and cling to the current health trends? Are you stuck on what you learned in your high school health class? Do you believe the Cherrios box when it says it’s “heart healthy”? Are you still buying margarine because someone said you should back in the 1980’s? However you eat, whatever you choose, do it with conviction. Every bite you put in your mouth will impact your body in one way or another. Every time you scan your bank card…
