New Website Name: Why the Change?

Image Source You might have noticed that there is a new name around here. And you might wonder why? I started this blog in 2010, right after we bought a farm and had many visions for how to run that farm! One of my first posts was about how we remodeled our farmhouse kitchen (with help!) and shortly after wrote a post about butchering chickens. I wrote a lot about the GAPS Diet. I think that’s what brought many of you to this site. Proudly, I can say I was *one of the first* GAPS bloggers. If you were with me, blogging about GAPS in 2010, tell me! I want…

Money and Possessions don’t feed you

I started the year with a goal of reading 1 new book every week. Ha! It’s taken me two months to get through The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck. Not that it’s really a difficult book, I’ve just been busy. It is long, but not difficult. It is enjoyable, for the most part (through part of it, I was just mad at the main character…sorry if that spoils things for you). 😉  Anyways, I took some great quotes away from the book that reminded me of how things are today, and the choices that we all make. I want to share these thoughts with you. Wang Lung is the main character,…

Real Food Recipes to make this 4th of July!

photo credit When you’re on a special diet like GAPS, holidays and get-togethers can be a major stressor. I’ve searched around for some great recipes for you to enjoy this 4th of July, whether your on GAPS or you simply like REAL food! Enjoy! To start things off…. Everything wrapped in bacon (except chocolate!) is amazing, so what about these Bacon Wrapped Sweet Potato Bites? Not GAPS legal, but sweet potatoes are an ok cheat after you’re feeling a lot better, I think! If you can find these GAPS Legal Little Smokies, you could do a lot with them. Wrap them in bacon, make a honey-barbecue sauce, etc. What about…

    GAPS Grilling! Barbecued Ribs

It’s summer time (and almost the 4th of July!) and you want to grill, right? But if you’re on GAPS, the idea of grilling can be a little daunting, because every barbecue sauce out there has sugar in it (or worse yet, corn syrup!). Not any more! You can make amazing, yummy barbecued ribs that are GAPS legal! Yay! PrintBarbecued Ribs Ingredients4 TB sea salt 2 TB black pepper 2 TB ground cumin 2 TB dried oregano 4 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp cayenne pepper 4 racks ribs 28 oz jar crushed tomatoes 2 TB chili powder 4 c orange juice, fresh squeezed 2 c beef broth (homemade is best)…

Red, White & Blueberry Coconut Flour Shortcake

This week my husband gets lots of goodies like this, because it’s his Birthday week and Fathers’ Day week! Lucky guy! On Sunday, I made this treat for him and he loved it. It was so amazingly good that I thought I’d share it with you! Make sure to brown the butter (I think it adds a dimension of flavor) and yes, use 2 TABLESPOONS of vanilla! YUM! You might want to make this on the 4th of July. Or every day until then and every day after that until the berries are out of season! 🙂   SHORTCAKE: 6 eggs 1/2 cup butter or ghee, melted and browned 1/2 cup honey…

    The Life We Choose

Two weeks ago we went to Disneyland. We spent 3 days there and we loved it. Last week my husband went to California again, for work. He does not have to travel often (thankfully!), but sometimes he has to. This time it was for THREE DAYS. Yikes. We missed him! While in California, this time, my hubby spent time with other managers from his company and got to hear a little about their lives. We all have many choices to make in deciding how we will live. One night, on the phone, my husband was saying to me that we could: Live in California Make a lot more money Have…

Lessons from the farm: we are so disconnected

I’m saying we as in me, you, all of us. Farm life has made us realize how disconnected we are. What are we disconnected from?? Our trash. Where does it go? Every week we set a can out at the curb and a truck takes it away and we never have to think about it again. Recycle? Don’t recycle? Recycling is for the hippies and tree huggers, right? No. I was reading Charlotte’s Web to the kids today and came across this: “Below the apple orchard, at the end of the path, was a dump where Mr. Zuckerman threw all sorts of trash and stuff that nobody wanted any more.…

    Is Chocolate GAPS Legal?

{photo credit: oskay} I make my obsession over chocolate no secret on this site. I LOVE chocolate. It was one of the biggest “issues” I had with starting GAPS–how could I live without chocolate? Pre-GAPS, I always had a stash of Cadbury Mini Eggs. Yes. I would bulk-buy at Easter. I know they make them at Christmas time, too, but for some reason I though that the pastel colored ones must be healthier than the bright red and green ones. To think that any of those things would be healthy in the slightest…well that is another story! We were on GAPS for at least 6 months when I read this:…

You could win a $25 Amazongift card! 🙂 I made these goodies on the day that many people in my family began throwing up! There were not many of us who could test these, but that just meant more for us; right? 😉 They’re not exactly like traditional Snickerdoodles, but they hit the craving, for me. Try them and tell me what you think! Coconut Flour Snickerdoodles INGREDIENTS: 4  eggs 3/4 c honey 1 tsp   vanilla extract 1/4 tsp sea salt 1/2 c  butter,…
