Supporting Small Farms

Farmer’s Market Purchases, 6/7

We love going to the farmer’s market. It makes us want to be farmers again. 🙂 We are happy to talk to the other farmers and learn what they’re doing–and support them. I encourage all of you–everyone–go to the farmer’s market. Support your local farmers. Even if they don’t do things perfectly (as you would if you were the farmer), support them. Small farms are dying. We know first hand how hard it is to survive on a small farm income. These people are the hardest workers you will ever meet–and they’re providing good food. Go, shake their hands. Ask about their farm. Ask if they’ll be back to the market, and what they expect to bring next week. Then, come back and buy what they’re selling.

When I go to the farmer’s market, I bring my big African basket. If you can find one of these baskets at a local Saturday market where an actual African woman is selling them, buy one there! If you don’t have such luck in your home town, by all means, buy one on Amazon, through my link. I make a small percentage, but it is no extra cost to you. Every purchase that is made through my Amazon links helps keep this site up & running. 🙂

I was pretty impressed with the things we were able to purchase at this Saturday’s farmer’s market, considering the fact that it is so early in the season. Check out what we got!

  • 2 1/2 dozen pastured eggs
  • 1 gallon low pasteurized, non-homoginized milk (+ 1 quart chocolate–it was free with a “deal”)
  • 1 bag mixed lettuce
  • 2 bunches mini asparagus
  • 1 bunch large asparagus
  • 3 bunches kale
  • 1 bunch green onions
  • 2 bunches Walla Walla sweet onions
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 package honey caramels
  • 1 bag cherries
  • 3 peaches
  • 9 apricots
  • 1 loaf gluten free bread from a local bakery

I wish I had written down prices to share–next time, I will. I also have 4 large zucchini and 1 bunch of kale from another farmer’s market I attended last Wednesday. With all of this, and the pastured meat in our freezer, I think we can make some pretty amazing, healthy meals this week! Note: this is not enough eggs for my family. 🙂 I buy 2 dozen per week from a local family, and I’ll probably pick up 1 or 2 dozen more at the Wednesday market.

What did you find at the farmer’s market this week?
