Things I Love & things I want to Try

Things I love: That the sun has come out!! At least mostly! The kids have the little plastic pool out in the backyard and they have been playing like crazy! My peas are growing! My garden is huge (50 feet by 100 feet) and so far it’s looking beautiful! (Read: the weeds have not had time to overtake the whole thing!!). Biokult from the GAPS Diet Store. I mentioned before that I’d stopped taking it and my belly fat increased and so did my weight. It’s not perfect yet, but Biokult has been the key to the weight going back down again & the belly fat decreasing a bit. I…

Low on Vitamin D? Eat Eggs from Pastured Chickens!

Around the holidays, I had to buy some store bought eggs so that we had enough to do some Christmas baking. I buy “cage free” eggs when I have to buy them at the store. That doesn’t mean anything, though. Neither does “free range.” So what. They have a 1 foot by 1 foot space to roam? They’re still in stinky, cramped chicken houses with little to no outside lighting, no grass, and no bugs. They’re still fed a “vegetarian” diet of soy and corn, when chickens are not vegetarians and would never choose to eat soy or corn on their own. I forgot about the store-bought eggs, and I…

What to do if you are low in Iodine

I posted yesterday about how to find out if you are deficient in iodine. Now, let’s say that you find that your body needs iodine. What do you do?   Dr. Natasha said that you can keep painting iodine on your skin and let your body absorb it as it needs it.   I say, it probably doesn’t hurt to focus on eating foods that are naturally rich in iodine. Note that I said naturally rich, not foods that are supplemented with iodine. The great thing about our body is that if we need iodine rich foods (and we’re not full of “bad bacteria” and yeast), our body will crave…

    Testing for Iodine Deficiency

I have heard mixed messages about iodine from different doctors and medical studies. There is a massive amount of research available on what can happen in the body when a person is deficient in iodine. If you are not getting enough iodine, you could face: Thyroid Dysfunction Grave’s Disease Thyroid cancer Impaired intellectual and neuromotor development Mental impairment Osteoporosis Difficulty in getting pregnant and staying pregnant Loss of pregnancy (stillborn baby) Low birth weight Neurological damage to your baby (mental retardation, etc.) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (S.I.D.S) Increased risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer Depression Increased risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease   And yet, when I…

    The Hygiene Hypothesis

Several weeks ago, we found out that Farm Princess is severely allergic to peanuts. The doctor mentioned that more and more people are becoming allergic to peanuts, and I asked him why that is. He said that there are two thoughts on this subject: 1. It is because of the way we process nuts in our country (I will cover that in another post) 2. It is because of the Hygiene Hypothesis

    Hand Sanitizer

We were watching an episode of The Office tonight, and The Farmer heard me say "I agree" about something Dwight said. If you watch The Office and you know who Dwight is, you're probably laughing right now. No, I didn't say we should grow a beet farm or purposely sneeze on each other's food. :) But I did agree that hand sanitizers are not good.
